Father's Day
Recently I had my first Father's day and it was quite an event. First,I woke up to a brand new coffee mug with Aiden's hand and foot print on the side. Next Julie and I went to breakfast. I thought I would spend the rest of day getting some stuff done around the house, mow the lawn, and try to relax. As I was outside kicking the mower for its failure to start (again), Julie's whole family came walking up the block. Julie had arranged for her mom to watch Aiden while she and I went to the Orioles game with her dad and brothers. It was a great day. We took the light rail down to the park and she had arranged for very good seats in the club level (in the shade with people coming around to take beer and food orders). The Orioles lost of course but not before sending the game to extra innings with a two run homer in the ninth. We finished off the day by ordering pizza from our favorite take out place. I have included some pics from Father's day below.
The mommy exchange
I realize that I haven't updated the blog in awhile but we have been busy even by our new post-baby standards. Julie has especially been busy as she has been working very hard to get her first grant out (a K99 for all you scientist types). The following week she presented her work at a local conference (and won a prize for best poster presentation I might add). Finally, she headed out to California to present at a conference in San Francisco. I am exhausted having just written about all the stuff she's been doing. Anyway, this was a big milestone for mommy and Aiden because they had never been apart for four whole days before. Another problem was that I am on a rotation that requires call and reasonably long hours. Our solution was to call in a professional and my mom came out to stay with us for a week. Aiden and Grandma had a great time together. I have added a few pics from Julie's trip to San Francisco (she had our camera), and now some pics of Aiden from around the house with Grandma.

A night out

Last month Julie and I had a night out for the first in awhile. A grad student in Julie's lab babysat while we went out to the annual Department of Pathology awards dinner. The dinner was at the historic Belvedere Hotel in downtown Baltimore. We had a nice kid-free evening and headed out on the town with some of my friends from residency afterward. Anwyay, this a photgraph taken of Julie and I at the awards dinner by the professional pathology photographers. Most of the pictures they take are of cancers or specimens for publication in academic journals; I think they really enjoyed the chance to take a picture of some living subjects.

Above is a picture of the residents in the department of pathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Johns Hopkins Hospital was the first American hospital to have residents and basically came up with the current model for the American medical system. The first professor of pathology was William Welch also the first dean of the Johns Hopkins Medical School. The photo above will be added to the wall outside the residents room. It is a hallway that has a group photo similar to the one above for every class dating back to the early 1900's and includes some of the most famous names in all of pathology (William Osler, William Welch, Homer Wright, George Whipple, Ernest Goodpasture etc). Good company.
